Margaret’s Story

I was born in March 1932 in Mowbray Road Nursing Home, Sunderland

I went to Green Terrace Infants and Juniors, then Cowan Terrace School and Bede Grammar School 1943-48

I was Evacuated to Witton Park September 1939 – June 1940

We lived in Fenwick Street – where Sunderland Leisure Centre was later on.

1948-52 – I worked at North Eastern Electricity Board – eventually powers samas operator – printing electric bills.

1952-56 – Nursing training to SRN at Sunderland Royal

1956-57 – 1st and 2nd part Midwifery at Sunderland and Farnborough, Kent

1957-60 – Industrial nurse at Siemens Edison Swan, Sunderland

1960-63 – Midwife at South Shields Maternity Hospital

I got married in 1959 and moved to South Shields and on October 27th 1963 – our son, Peter was born.

I did some part time work in hospital, then later 3 years at Sunderland Poly for teacher training certificate – part time teaching.

I also worked at the pension advice centre

1988 – husband died

1992 – Peter was at uni, as a mature student in the USA and suffered severe head injuries and since then I’ve been his carer/helper.

This is a photo of my great grandmother, great aunt and my mother holding me as a baby - she told me that her crepe dress look wrinkled because I had just had a wee on her!

MyGreat Grandparents. They lived near Beamish and my Great Grandfather worked on the lifts in the pits that transported miners down into the pit.
